Renovation of former "Monte Elmo Sesto" cable car top station and repurposing as a history of rock climbing museum

Since the era of the old Monte Elmo Sesto cable car came to an end in 2020, its top station has remained unused. Now this mountain station is being given a comprehensive redesign and a new purpose: it will become the site of the new Messner Mountain Museum Roca. The museum, opening in 2024, is dedicated to the theme of rock climbing, with an emphasis on its historical development.

The aim is to retain the existing structure of the old mountain station via sustainable upgrading and modernisation. Implementation of fixed, large-scale "landscape window" glazing is designed to show off the impressive mountainous surroundings to their best advantage.

FRENER & REIFER was commissioned for the design-engineering, production and installation of these external facades. An elegant glass facade as a steel add-on construction with an area of approx. 150m² (external dimensions approx. 17 x 11 m) will be realised, as well as various door and window elements.
