Location

FRENER & REIFER has completed an extension to a family hotel in the Valais mountains in Switzerland. The striking design is by local architect, artist and musician Raymond Theler. The architectural partnership arge architektur - theler | wyer | Imboden & Partner, also from the Valais, looked after both execution and site management. The clients are the Hotel Glocke AG owners Sebastian and Sonja Schmid.

Our scope of work in Reckingen, in the Goms district of the canton of Valais, included the design and execution of the custom all-glass structures, including two room-high stick system facades in minimo_FR steel/glass for the entrance and conference areas, the interior glazing and several cantilevered cubic glass skylights. These combine tradition and modernity: local Valais legends have been related at the hotel since 1993, including those about the industrious dwarves - called Goggwäärgjini - of the Upper Valais. In winter, when the snow falls, the unique cubic windows of the sauna area will look like a dwarf's dwelling - a "Goggwäärgji hill" – with only the glass cubes visible, shining out of the snow.
